In light of continuing disturbing allegations of unacceptable worker
conditions at the Agriprocessors Plant in Postville, Iowa, the United Synagogue
of Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly are united in calling for a
thorough evaluation by kosher consumers of the appropriateness of purchasing and
consuming meat products produced by the Rubashkin's label.
Rubashkin's produces kosher meat primarily under the Aaron and David label
at the Agriprocessors facility. It is a major producer of kosher meat and
poultry in the United States. The allegations about the terrible treatment of
workers employed by Rubashkin's has shocked and appalled members of the
Conservative Movement as well as all people of conscience. As Kashrut seeks to
diminish animal suffering and offer a humane method of slaughter, it is bitterly
ironic that a plant producing kosher meat be guilty of inflicting human
suffering.
The Rabbinical Assembly and United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism will
immediately release an advisory to its members and constituents to evaluate the
appropriateness of consuming Rubashkin products until the current situation is
addressed. This advisory extends not only to products purchased on the retail
level but to meat and poultry consumed in restaurants and at private functions,
such as weddings and bar mitzvahs.
This is a good start, but an "advisory" "evaluat[ing] the appropriateness of consuming Rubashkin products" is not the same as an outright prohibition, which I would like to see. I will stay tuned.
Of interest to locals in Seattle, I called the University Village QFC, which is the largest source of kosher meat in Seattle's North End, and their butcher shop informed me that most of their kosher poultry is Rubashkin (some frozen items are from Empire), but most of their kosher red meat is from Meal Mart (although some is from Rubashkin, apparently because some Chabad Jews will only eat Chabad-hekhshered meat).

The problem is Alle/MealMart is likely no better than Rubashkin -- they import a significant portion of their meat from South America, where the working conditions are at least as bad and the animals are shacked and hoisted before shechita. PETA recently released a video of shackle-and-hoist from a plant in Uruguay which rivaled the cruelty of Postville, and Temple Grandin called it "total animal cruelty." Here is the CJLS teshuva on shackle-and-hoist on Dr. Grandin's website:

Note Dr. Grandin's comments in the Forward:
“It is in a category by itself for badness,” said Temple Grandin, ... who has advised many kosher meat companies, referring to “shackle and hoist.”
“It’s cruel to the animals and it’s dangerous for the employees,” Grandin added.
So my advice is that if you cannot be sure that the source of your meat is up to Jewish moral standards, eat vegetarian. Well planned, it's also better for your health and the health of G-d's creation in terms of less environmental destruction the less animal products one eats. There are plenty of kosher-certified vegetarian/vegan alternatives out there (mock meats like Tofurky Lightlife, and Yves; soymilk, and soy "ice cream" like So Delicious, for starters) and there is no excuse or hardship. I normally avoid eggs and dairy as well, knowing the suffering of the animals (especially battery-caged hens) in these industries, and what that cruelty does to the souls of those who work on these factory farms.
John, it seems all of the Trader Joe's in the area have gone Empire only for chicken and turkey (whole, breast, and ground). I didn't get a chance to see if they even have red meat right now, though, to see where it came from.
Not sure if this is due to lack of availability, a planned switchover, or, what I hope, a political and ethical decision on their part.

Washington - First Orthodox Rabbi Calls To Halt Sales Of Rubashkin Meat In DC Area
Washington - VIN News has confirmed that Orthodox Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, spiritual leader of Ohev Sholom of Washington, D.C., the National Synagogue, is calling for the Vaad Harabonim of Washington to take appropriate action to ensure that the meat we are eating is kosher.
...
VIN News has also learned that other Jewish Kosher organizations might call for the same action, which in turn may put pressure on Rabbi Weissmandl and the OU to react.
Rabbi Herzfeld's letter to the Va'ad ha-Rabbanim of DC is on the site. It is hopefully good to see this issue becoming less denominationally tinged and more jews across the spectrum uniting to take a moral stand.
