Coffee Terminology
I have recently started using a new term when ordering drip coffee, which usually happens at Peet's, sometimes Starbucks, and rarely anywhere else (I drink lots of coffee at other places, but I tend to order espresso shots rather than drip coffee at places other than Peet's and Starbucks). The terms is "walking room." When you order drip coffee, you are generally asked whether you want "room." "Room" in this context means "room for cream." I don't want that, because I drink my coffee black. However, if I'm either walking any material distance with my coffee or driving and planning to consume the coffee while driving, I don't want the cup filled all the way up, because it spills. I could always ask for "room," but the room necessary for cream is more than the room necessary to prevent spillage. So for a while I've stammered through convoluted explanations of precisely how much "room" I want. Last week, the Peet's employee responded by saying "we call that 'walking room.'" I've since started using that term, and it works quite nicely.
